In November 2013 I was approached to design the brand Identity for a Cape Town based surfing company to be called “Into The Surf” which offers tours and surfing lessons in and around the Western Cape, South Africa.

The new surfing brand needed to be iconic and represent the nature of the service offered as well as it’s location. It was to inspire both people new to surfing as well as surfers visiting South Africa. This project also enabled my to explore hand written lettering which I then late worked into the designs.

After various logo designs, I presented 3 initial logos to the client. Two logos stood out and the client wanted to see a combination of the two. The design above was one of the logos that appealed most to the client and this was used to set the mood of the final logo. Early stage sketches where reworked and additional hand painted lettering was created. The type needed to look rough and in tune with the surf scene. Once I jotted down a couple of roughs, I photographed them and later reworked the ones I thought would work. After that I proceeded to work on the rest of the logo in vector format.

For the logo I chose to combine elements of surf with the beautiful location that is Cape Town, as well as handpainted lettering. Undergoing various stages, the logo developed from handpainted elements to vectorised surf scenes that were simplified to various degrees.
